Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as an avenue for action. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially conscious and showed her how to use art as a method of expression. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family was for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a young student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house of one of the jury. As a result of her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the public relations industry. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition to PR, the company created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
